Hi, I’m Austin Ardor — Founder of The Myth Dimension, a fiction writing coach, and author.
I started writing back when I was condemned to summer school. I had failed math 3 times in a row, and my high school guidance counselor confirmed that if I wasn’t able to make up any math credits, I wouldn’t get my diploma. My family had planned a trip to see our family in Newfoundland for 6 weeks and decided that it was a just punishment that I would be forced to do math class while they went whale watching.
Just like that, at 16 years old, I was left alone in my house for 6 weeks straight in the middle of summer. My only obligation was a grueling 8 hours a day of math class that I was shipped off to every morning (they didn’t warn me about that). So, like any good teenager would do if given a severe amount of freedom and a concerning discretionary spending cash pile, I figured it would be a good time to start writing a book.
I wanted to stick it to the man and suffer bravely through summer school. I wanted to have something tangible to show for that summer. Since I had been writing off and on since I knew how to read, I figured I could really show ‘em by . Storytelling was natural to me; an extension of play, an excuse to use the imagination developed by Rick Riordan and Pixar movies. I sat down with my pen and paper, and began to worldbuild for the first time.
Now, I’ve built multiple careers in writing and publishing. I’ve worked at bookstores and in library book distribution nationwide, I was one of the world’s first professional worldbuilders, and I was even briefly involved in selling rare antiquarian books. I’ve been the proud fiction writing coach that has helped 50+ authors find their success. I’m the founder of a social platform for authors, which I also named after one of my favourite concepts from Joseph Campbell - the guy who discovered The Hero’s Journey.
If you can’t tell, I really like books and supporting authors.
Nowadays, I primarily focus on helping authors develop their own narrative skills and storytelling. I help writers achieve their writing dreams and publish the stories they never thought would come to light. I want more successful authors in the world. I believe that a good storyteller deserves to do it for a living and sustain themselves off of their writing. My experience in business and books means that I get to teach authors how to tell a really good story and sell it too.
I believe that everything that goes into a good story sitting on a shelf is a skill that can be developed. Plot points, prose, characters, worldbuilding, dialogue, formatting, grammar - you name it, you can learn it. Similarly, I teach authors how to achieve that first sale and truly kick off their career; whether it’s getting your query letter accepted or a self-published book landing on someone’s Kobo. The only thing standing in between you and the dream is a lack of resources, a better writing routine, and a rounding out your skill development.
I’ve been working on my own novels as well, most of which I meticulously write and rewrite over the years. I have an unending patience with myself to perfect my stories as my skill becomes better and better, so I don’t expect to be published with any of them for another year or two. (If you’re someone who might want to publish my books, feel free to reach out! Just because I’m not actively querying doesn’t mean I’m not interested.) I primarily write in Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Young Adult when I work on my own stuff. I’ve never been into Literary Fiction or contemporary stuff. My taste can be summarized as Go Big or Go Home.
